Because the decade (gosh) is coming to an end and because I like lists, I've decided to do a list of my top 10 favourite movies of these 10 years. And because I'm anal (and greedy), I'm gonna do two lists, one dedicated solely to animated movies. With much help from flixster, here goes, in descending order, my favourite movies.

Favourite Live-action Movies

10. Juno (2007)
Best teen/ coming-of-age movie of the decade, because it doesn't feel like a brainless teen flick. I like the refreshing way the subject of teen pregnancy is handled, lighthearted and positive without ignoring the seriousness of the situation. Smart and witty dialogue, a really great performance by Ellen Page (<3 <3 <3) and a fun and cute soundtrack.

9. The Dark Knight (2008)
I was seriously blown away after watching it the first time, and it was still good the second time round. I can safely say this is my favourite comic book movie, it's the way a Batman movie should be, and it was so right getting Christopher Nolan to reboot the franchise. So many things about this movie is great, but I think the best must be Heath Ledger's (may he RIP) performance as the psychotic best-villain-ever Joker.

8. Mulholland Drive (2000)
Seriously one of the best movies that belong to the "mindfuck" category. Frustrating to watch and difficult to comprehend, as David Lynch films usually are, it was very disturbing and really got to me, especially on further googling. The confusion actually worked as it's a movie about illusions. I deliberated on including this on the list since it's not an enjoyable movie, but it is one of the most interesting I've ever watched, and Naomi Watts was superb. It's a movie you either hate-hate it, or hate-love it, and it was the latter for me.

7. Slumdog Millionaire (2008)
I really like Danny Boyle's style. Like Trainspotting, the cinematography is stunning, the pacing is energetic and the music works well with it. I like the way the game show is used to tell the story, and while the story exposes the plight of the children in India's slums, the tone is not melodramatic and remains positive and inspiring. It's a movie with a lot of hope.

6. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
Coincidentally, I just saw another of Michel Gondry's films, The Science of Sleep. I definitely prefer Eternal Sunshine. It has an interesting concept that provokes thought and is awesomely filmed, very creative and quirky. Also, Jim Carrey is at his dramatic best, working well with Kate Winslet. It is all that but more importantly it manages to touch my heart.

5. Okuribito (Departures) (2009)
Yes it is predictable, but I never got why people had to point that out, because I don't think the point was to surprise with a plot twist (yawn) but to move, and move me it did, as simple but human stories often do. Funny and sweet, it's a subtle and poignant piece about life and death. And the score by Joe Hisaishi couldn't be any better.

4. Amelie (2001)
This is one film that you cannot stop smiling while watching. Cute, funny and simply magical. Audrey Tautou was a delight to watch!

3. Das Leben der Anderen (The Lives of Others) (2006)
Recently, I've been recommending this movie to friends, as I was reminded of this movie during the anniversary week of the fall of the Berlin Wall. It is quietly powerful, meaningful and yes, hopeful. The ending scene made me tear. I don't really wanna describe it too much, do watch it if you haven't because it is exceptional.

2. In the Mood for Love (2001)
A signature WKW piece and the best film about love that is unrequited and impossible to fulfill. Full of melancholy and sadness that make you weep. Nothing much really happens, but even nothing happening is so beautiful to watch, and to feel.

1. Cidade de Deus (City of God) (2003)
The story, interestingly told through one person's perspective, is disturbing and grabs you, the cinematography stuns you with the vibrant hues and the fast-paced, heart-thumping sequences, complemented with rhythmic beats, yank you off your seat. Probably as close to perfection as an action-packed movie about the harsh realities of gritty Brazilian ghetto life, can get.

Almost-made-its: Good Bye Lenin, Last Life in the Universe, Cashback, Memento, Garden State

Favourite Animated Movies

10. Finding Nemo (2003)
9. Monsters, Inc. (2001)
8. Shrek (2001)
7. Coraline (2009)
6. Howl's Moving Castle (2005)
5. The Incredibles (2004)
4. The Triplets of Belleville (2003)
3. Wall-E (2008)
2. Spirited Away (2001)
1. Up (2009)

(Had a little diffculty putting together 10 titles for the second list because I didn't catch as many supposedly-good animated movies as I'd wanted to. Eg. Fantastic Mr. Fox, Ponyo, etc.)

And there you have it. I took around 4 hours (!) to fully compile the lists! So what's your list like?
